Build the room around the equipment.

A server room brings several building systems together in one space. Equipment layout, power, cooling, physical access and environmental protection have to be coordinated so the room can support the infrastructure you intend to install.

EDISON provides design, construction and project management for server and computer rooms. The scope combines the room infrastructure with cabling and patching, allowing the layout and the supporting systems to be considered as one project.

  • UPS power and CRAC precision air conditioning
  • FM200 fire suppression
  • Water-leak detection and Sensaphone remote alarms
  • Door access control, smartcard entry and CCTV
  • Raised floor, structured cabling and patching

Power, cooling and protection together.

A room layout should account for the equipment load and the building conditions before individual systems are selected.

Rack layout, power and cooling

The rack plan is a starting point for power distribution, UPS requirements and precision air conditioning. Equipment power demand, heat output, maintenance access and expected growth all affect the design. Available building power and the practical locations for cooling equipment also need to be checked.

Environmental protection and alerts

Fire suppression, water-leak detection and remote alarms address different risks within the room. EDISON’s scope includes FM200 and Sensaphone systems. Their suitability, coverage and connections to the building need to be assessed for the site, together with the people who should receive an alert.

Access, flooring and cabling

Door access control, smartcard entry and CCTV help manage access to the equipment area. Raised floors, cable routes and patching need to fit the rack layout and maintenance requirements. Planning these together avoids leaving access and cable space as decisions made after equipment is installed.

Agree the boundaries of the build.

Room works may involve the landlord, building management, electrical and mechanical contractors, and the team operating the servers. Confirm the interfaces between their work, site approvals, access arrangements and responsibility for each system.

For an existing room, identify equipment that must remain running and the permitted work windows. A floor plan, rack inventory, equipment power requirements and intended completion date help establish the project scope.
